IELTS Exam In A Nutshell

The IELTS test is formatted to test a candidate's proficiency across all four language skills: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. The Speaking test is a face-to-face interview with a certified examiner and is conducted as an interactive session.

Research has shown that preparing for the IELTS test motivates aspirants to develop a real and in-depth understanding of the English language. Besides, their English skills are honed to perfection with the practical sessions. The candidate's English improves and they are ready to conduct themselves in an English speaking country. This is the main reason why IELTS is the first choice for people planning to study or move abroad.

You can choose from two types of IELTS tests: Academic or General Training, depending on your reason to shift to another country. Both modules comprise of four parts: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Test results are graded on an IELTS 9-band scale.

Academic Training (for higher education): The Academic format caters for the needs of those looking to study abroad. The candidate's admission to undergraduate and postgraduate courses at foreign universities is often based on the IELTS Academic test results.

General Training (for studies, work or migrating abroad): The General Training format concentrates more on the basic survival skills required while moving to a foreign country. This test format is meant for those moving to English-speaking countries for higher education, gaining work experience or attending training programmes.

Components Of The IELTS Test

The IELTS Test consists of four modules: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. A candidate must clear all four modules to pass the test and obtain an IELTS Test Report Form. The Listening and Speaking modules are the same for all candidates. In the Reading and Writing Modules, a candidate can choose between Academic and General Training.

Total Test Time: 2 hours 45 minutes

The IELTS test is formatted in such a manner as to tap the full potential of a non-user of the English language as well as an expert user. The Listening, Reading and Writing modules of the test are completed on the same day. The Speaking module can be held 7 days before/after the other modules; the IELTS test centre fixes the date for this module.
